AQ Khan a free man

February 6th, 2009 by Jim Arkedis

A Pakistani court has lifted restrictions on the house arrest of AQ Khan, the father of Pakistan’s nuclear arms arsenal who later sold nuclear secrets to the likes of North Korea, Iran, and Libya.  Great guy, huh?

I would love to have been a fly on the wall on this dripping-with-political-ramifications decision.  Khan is still widely regarded as a Pakistani national hero, and I have a sneaking suspicion that there was more than a bit of behind-the-scenes government arm-twisting on this one.  His release should be well-received by the public, temporarily and superficially shoring up a tiny bit of support for President Zardari.

The US has long wanted to question Khan for his role in the nuclear transfers, but the Pakistanis have always denied the possibility.  Extraordinary rendition, anyone?

… sorry, bad joke.  Too soon?

And, in case you’re wondering what you do while under house arrest… You write a website, of course.  Check out AQ’s website, here.

(This causes me to  reflect on a whole bunch of rather zen-like possibilities…. “I write a website…  Am I secretly under house arrest?  Do I know that I’m under house arrest?” … and so on.)

This guy is slime. The US should have the CIA kidnap him and drag him off to Gitmo and waterboard him until he gives up everything he knows, then drag him outside and put a bullet in his skull. Giving the bomb to NK, Iran etc. is unforgivable.

The UK petitioned to have him turned over to the IAEA for questioning. At the very least the world should know the extent of the damage he caused. Personally I think he should be prosecuted by the International Criminal Court. This would be a great time for Obama to show support to the ICC.
